Summary

A young girl finds a clever way to keep her favorite things--and people--close to her forever in Memory Jars, from Caldecott Honoree Vera Brosgol。

Freda is devastated when she can't eat all the delicious blueberries she's picked。 She has to wait a whole year before they're back, and she doesn't want to lose them! Then Gran reminds her that they can save blueberries in a jar, as jam。 So Freda begins to save all her favorite things。 But it turns out that saving everything also means she can't enjoy anything, and Freda realizes that some things are best saved as memories。

Reviews
Upset that she can't eat every bucketful of blueberries she picked with her gran all in the same afternoon ("they were the best right then and they'd never be any better"), a lovably quirky girl takes "preserving" to a whole new level。 Add Brosgol's signature big-eyed characters, a touch of dark humor and a mouthwatering jam recipe, and you've got all the ingredients for a sequel。 -The New York Times

Was too distracted by the fridge horror to enjoy the book。 The art, as always, was very cute。

The best part about this book is the blueberry jam recipe at the end! It disturbed me that she put people in jars to "save" them。。。 The best part about this book is the blueberry jam recipe at the end! It disturbed me that she put people in jars to "save" them。。。 。。。more

A great picture book that looks at the difference between capturing memories and savoring experiences and people in our lives。 Recommended for read alouds and early readers。 It also would work well with creative writing about memories for all ages。

Wow! I loved this one。 Enchanting, as well as a little dark and upsetting, but with a jam recipe in the back!

Great illustrations。 At first all is realistic, then the story turns to fantasy。 Interesting message about treasuring memories and accepting change。 I had to read it more than once to understand the theme。 This makes me hesitate to recommend without reservation。

The power of memory and the danger of trying to forever keep things the way they are。 I love Brosgol's illustrations, and her sense of fantasy is both quirky and intriguing。 The power of memory and the danger of trying to forever keep things the way they are。 I love Brosgol's illustrations, and her sense of fantasy is both quirky and intriguing。 。。。more

When Freda goes blueberry picking with her Gran, she tries to eat all of the blueberries right away。 Even though the blueberries are best when first picked, Freda isn’t able to eat them all。 Her Gran reminds Freda that she makes the blueberries into jam to preserve them so they can be enjoyed longer。 That gave Freda an idea! She started saving everything she wanted to keep fresh in jars。 She kept a warm cookie, unscuffed sneakers, an unmelted popsicle, flowers, birds’ eggs, and much more。 She even put her best friend in a jar before he could move away。 She saved music, rainbows, clouds, stars and the moon。 Freda had saved all of her favorite things, except one。 When Gran got into the jar, Freda’s world was very quiet。 That’s when she tried some of the blueberry jam, which reminded her of summer, friendship, her grandparents and much more。 Freda remembered it all。This picture book looks at our desire to stop things where they are and not allow them to change。 Freda’s ability to jar everything she loves is both marvelously creepy but also immensely satisfying, at first。 Brosgol allows the story to go on until the world becomes empty and silent around Freda。 It isn’t until then that her memories of her friends and family return and refill her world。 Still, Brosgol hints at the end that it may not quite be over yet。The illustrations capture the warmth of Freda’s life and her connection to her grandmother。 The shadows enter Freda’s world as she surrounds herself with jars of all of her favorite things, basically in suspended animation。 The jars fill her space with a cold glass emptiness where you can only see shadows inside of them。 It’s very effective and a relief to return to the brighter colors again。A book that shows us all why we need to let life happen rather than clinging too tight。 Appropriate for ages 3-5。 。。。more

The art in here was fun and beautiful。 Freda learns a lesson about appreciating what you have in its free form in the time that you can have it。 Nothing lasts forever, but you can appreciate what you love fully while its present。I was afraid this was going to be another picture book that turns a bit sad。 I was surprised at the humorous reality-defying moments, like the unmelting popsicle, and her putting her friend and grandmother into her jars。This was a fun little story that could potentially The art in here was fun and beautiful。 Freda learns a lesson about appreciating what you have in its free form in the time that you can have it。 Nothing lasts forever, but you can appreciate what you love fully while its present。I was afraid this was going to be another picture book that turns a bit sad。 I was surprised at the humorous reality-defying moments, like the unmelting popsicle, and her putting her friend and grandmother into her jars。This was a fun little story that could potentially make for a good craft as well。~Shay 。。。more

Hating to think of change and loss, Freda resolves to save everything in jars, just like she and her Gran save summer's beautiful blueberries by making them into jam。 She saves things (both possible and impossible) in a wonderfully magical realist fashion, but ultimately comes to realize that by saving all of these people and things and experiences in jars, she misses their wonderfully unpredictable, changing, companiable nature。 Freda and her Gran, who she lives with, are Black。 Author/illustra Hating to think of change and loss, Freda resolves to save everything in jars, just like she and her Gran save summer's beautiful blueberries by making them into jam。 She saves things (both possible and impossible) in a wonderfully magical realist fashion, but ultimately comes to realize that by saving all of these people and things and experiences in jars, she misses their wonderfully unpredictable, changing, companiable nature。 Freda and her Gran, who she lives with, are Black。 Author/illustrator is White。 Themes: Change, Memory, Family, Grandparents, Loss, Social Emotional learningAge range: Preschool-Early Elementary 。。。more

This was such a cute story for kids and adults!! Love the recipe for blueberry jam at the end, a great way to make memories with family。 The illustrations were also bright and fun!

I find it very very interesting to try to illustrate to children an aspect of memories。 How well do they understand the concept of memory?“ 。 。 。 some things are best saved as memories。” - and there are things that are right in front of us that we should embrace in the moment。A delightful read。 A memorable one。 But don’t put it in a memory jar, enjoy it now, in the present!

Vera Brosgol again gives us a very different take on the world。 A great book for a slightly older audience and one that would make a great discussion or writing prompt。 I loved the illustrations。
